Friday Lunch and Learns: Testing Frameworks

Every Friday lunchtime at Softwire we all get lured into a meeting room with the promise of free food, and one of our colleagues gives a talk on something they’ve been working on recently.
We filmed this talk on testing frameworks, by Camille Baldock, so that others can enjoy it too.

Softwire Comedy Night

Monday 23rd January was supposedly the most depressing day of the year. So we held a stand-up comedy night in aid of the mental health charity Mind.

70 people turned up to see superb performances from Jeremy Beens, Tom Craine, Sara Pascoe and sketch duo Totally Tom.

However, the highlight of the evening was the performances by eight brave Softwire employees, all doing stand-up comedy for the first time! I’ve included a video of the highlights below.

We raised £325 for Mind, so thanks to everyone who came to support, and particularly to the performers: Yemi Olagbaiye, Camilla Watson, Sam Carr, Andy Smart, Zoe Cunningham, Andrew Bisgrove, Tej Birdi and, er, me!

Softwire interviewed by Warwick University

Warwick University wanted to know why we were at their careers fair, and how their students can get a job at Softwire. We were only too happy to oblige.

Here’s Harry Cummings, who studied at Warwick University:

Softwire – The Movie

A few weeks ago Oxford University sent us an aspiring documentary maker, Stella Ramsden, to make a film about life at a software development company.

We’re very proud to have been chosen as the first company in this scheme, and we really enjoyed having Stella around. And we think she’s done a great job!

You can find out more information about the scheme here.

Softwire feature on Channel 5′s “How Do They Do It”

You may have heard elsewhere about our Softwire annual company conference, which takes place at various exciting destinations around the world. (If not, have a read of some of our employee profiles such as Nick Golding or Peter Harley.)

In 2007 we visited Budapest, and at a lovely dinner in a fancy restaurant were entertained to see a camera crew recording some kind of documentary.

Four years on, and it seems that not only were we all captured on camera but the footage has been sold as representative of “French cuisine”. (It was a good restaurant.) After the blonde lady with glasses, almost everyone shown in the restaurant are members of Softwire. We’re famous!

Softwire Employee Innovation Day

We recently had Softwire’s first Employee Innovation Day (EID) – a day on which all employees could do anything they wanted with one simple brief: “it must potentially benefit Softwire in some way”. Employees were working in teams, pairs or on their own to produce something of interest to them. Softwire developers have a certain voracity for personal projects as it is, and it was clear that people were getting in earlier, staying later, and working more intensely on that day than any other in the week!

Some people chose to streamline a monotonous task that they did on a regular basis. Others worked on applications that benefitted Softwire as a whole with immediate effect, such as a new and improved wiki for all our internal documentation. Other individuals and teams produced demos of product ideas or technologies which could potentially be developed and sold by Softwire. One employee’s innovation was to video the day – you can see the results here:

The main aim for everyone involved was to get something finished by the end of the day, be it a demo, a summary of research, or a fully fledged working product. A few days later each team gave a 3-minute pitch on what they had done and prizes were awarded to the best projects and pitches… so there was a bit of competitive spirit in the mix too.
