Having worked at Softwire for over three years, you might expect that by now the honeymoon would be over. For all our recruitment literature claims about the benefits of working here - the atmosphere, the interesting work, the flexible hours, the remuneration - surely something would be starting to wear thin? But it's not. Not only is everything you read about Softwire in these pages true, but I've discovered that it's still true for me three years on.
So what is it that makes this such a great place to work? A major factor is undoubtedly the work itself. From the start of your career in Softwire you can experience all aspects of software development - meeting customers, discussing requirements, producing specifications and designs, implementing the software, testing it, delivering it and helping the customer to use it. You can work on projects large or small, dealing with all manner of different technologies. And there's nothing more satisfying than walking into a customer's office and finding a room full of people using the software you just delivered.
The working environment at Softwire is excellent. Whatever size project you're on (and this can vary from a large team to just one person) there's always a strong support network around you to answer questions and give advice - "on the job training" works well. And although projects do of course have deadlines, there's rarely pressure to work long hours for any protracted period - and the flexible working hours are a bonus.
Don't forget the social environment either. Whether it's pool, table football or PS2 in the office, the regular trips to the pub after (or during!) work, the stream of morale events throughout the year (karting, paintballing, poker evenings, ...) or the annual company holiday, there's always lots to get involved in. And if you don't find quite what you're looking for, you can always organise something new yourself.
Softwire may be small, but we're growing fast and its an exciting time to join. There is a real opportunity to make your mark here.
