Internship profile: Joe Edwards

JoeAfter doing nearly three years of maths, I still wasn’t really sure what I wanted to do afterwards, so I applied for an internship at Softwire. I’d only had a few small experiences programming, but it was something I was confident I could do – the environment was something I was more concerned about though. However even when I went down for my interview in January I knew I’d made the right decision – the office was friendly, and it felt like a really good place to be.

When I properly arrived in July, we had just a few days to get settled in before being thrown right in on a project. It’s intimidating at first seeing a massive codebase – especially not having done any serious coding before, but very quickly you start to pick it up, and it’s immensely satisfying once your first feature gets finished! Everyone is always happy to give advice if you need it, and there’ll be someone looking after you to make sure you’re on the right track.

I started off working on the new internal invoicing system, adding features to some existing code to make it ready for its first release. It’s scary, but definitely cool to think that something you’ve done will be used by all the people sitting around next to you pretty much every week! Later on I moved to the people / skill / book tracking system, with which we could have a little more fun with the design. (Something that doesn’t always come naturally to developers!)

The working environment is also very relaxed – working hours are very flexible, and I certainly appreciated being able to come in a bit later (of course, that does mean going home a bit later too). There is a lunch cooked every day by the chef, which is very good, and then after lunch – if you think you’re up to it – you can try and topple the Micro Machines kings on the PlayStation. This is not to forget the frequent trips to the pub, the picnic and of course the inaugural Softwire Olympics!

Overall, it’s been a great experience, and I’d definitely recommend it!
