Supercharging Starling’s digital transformation

The Opportunity

Today, continuous innovation in financial services is a ‘must-do’, rather than a ‘nice-to-have’. But sometimes the impetus for strategic transformation exceeds the capacity of digital teams, leading to a gap between what is required and what is deliverable.
This was the case with Starling Bank, who having secured £100million of funding from the BCR Capability and Innovation Fund to enhance its business banking services, asked Softwire to collaborate with their well-respected in-house team to deliver new business accounting tools, a new online banking platform and other digital initiatives.

Our Approach

Understanding Starling’s needs was key to a successful relationship and a successful endeavour and a Softwire team was mobilised to start work on-site at Starling within a few weeks of the BCR CIF money being secured. Over the following 18 months the make-up of the Softwire contingent continually evolved as Starling’s needs evolved and the projects flexed through their different phases.
Working alongside Starling Bank’s own engineering team and other digital partners, Softwire provided engineering, UX, business analysis and product ownership capabilities. We helped build Starling’s Business toolkit, a key deliverable, working on the bank’s business invoicing software and central accounting ledger, as well as helping shape the front end of the toolkit to ensure a consistent user experience across all its various components. And our designers worked with Softwire’s team to create the interaction and visual designs for their browser based business banking platform, a service used by over 400, 000 SMEs today.

The Impact

With the support of Softwire and other suppliers, Starling Bank successfully launched fresh digital products and services in a short space of time, cementing their reputation as the leading business neobank.
Their business banking mobile and desktop portal was among the first from a neo-bank and laid the groundwork for their personal online banking service. And the Business Toolkit which offered useful accounting tools to Starling’s customers not only differentiated their business offering from the competition, but also provided the bank with a new source of recurring revenue.

“ Softwire mobilised quickly and brought a variety of different skills into our team, which worked really well for us as we grew and hired to deliver our Capability and Innovation programme.
