Softwire Suggestions Board

24 June 2013, by

Suggestions BoardA few months ago, a new pinboard appeared in our chillout area: The Softwire Suggestions Board.

Employees are encouraged to add any suggestions they have to the board on anything they like: morale, the office, technical subjects.. anything!

If a suggestions card gets enough ticks, then someone will take the action to make that suggestion become reality.

Because of the Suggestions Board we have recently acquired a toastie maker for the office, are soon to be implementing standing-desks in the office, will be holding an employee innovation day, have had an inter-office pool tournament, and much more. It’s become quite a talking point in the office!

Lightning Talks: Open Source Contribution: A Practical How-To

18 June 2013, by

In April 2013 Rupert Wood organised our second Lightning Talks competition where eight employees each had five minutes to tell us something interesting about software development. This time our theme was “A Call To Arms”. Once again we voted on our favourite talks and the top three won Amazon vouchers.

This is Harry’s winning talk: “Open Source Contribution: A Practical How-To”. In four-and-a-half minutes he demonstrates how to fork a JavaScript library on GitHub, fix a bug in it and submit his fix back for review! Shortly after the competition the change he makes here was accepted and merged into the original project.

Gaining Programming Experience

28 May 2013, by

When recruiting for technical roles at Softwire, how much experience an applicant has isn’t the be all and end all for us when considering applications. If you’re interested in applying to work for us, why not find out exactly what we’re looking for?

However, it never hurts to gain some programming experience, or work to improve any experience you may already have. The best candidates (and often the people who do best after they start at Softwire) are generally the people with a passion for experimenting and trying out new things.

In terms of what you can do to gain some more experience of programming, the short answer is just practice.

It’s pretty much the case that you can choose any programming language, framework, type of project etc. and gain some real benefit from it. So we’d definitely recommend trying to find something that you think would be fun and engaging!

Every Friday lunchtime at Softwire we all get lured into a meeting room with the promise of free food, and one of our colleagues gives a talk on something they’ve been working on recently.

We filmed this talk on Attributes, by Camille Baldock, so that others can enjoy it too.
