How our data engineers rose to the challenges of DataKind UK’s DataDive weekend

Aya Stead, Alan Chodyniecki and Sam Collard

We are delighted to invite you to take part in a DataDive weekend from Saturday 15 to Sunday 16 July in London, organised by DataKind UK, and hosted by Softwire. DataKind UK is a charity that solves tough social challenges using data science. It helps social sector organisations benefit from advances in data science so they can make better decisions and have greater social impact.

About the event

This event aims to bring together people that have a belief that they can help change the world for the better, and who are interested in data science. They may already have some experience of:

  • Data visualisation, especially working knowledge of Power BI
  • Geospatial analysis
  • Familiarity with healthcare datasets is a bonus

Over two days, you’ll be volunteering in teams on a data project for the Starlight Foundation. Starlight exists to support children to experience the power of play and to boost their wellbeing and resilience during treatment, care, and recovery from illness. They do this through their ‘Health Play services’ in partnership with hospitals, and through their ‘Events and Experiences’ programmes.

Who can attend?

Volunteers from all levels of experience are welcome, from Data Enthusiast to Data Scientist. Here’s more information on each level:

  • Data Scientist – you rock statistical analysis and predictive analytics, are comfortable using R, Python, Matlab, or other common data analysis tools
  • Data Viz Whizz – you can whip up a pretty visualisation in no time and bring the wow factor to everything you do
  • Developer – you are comfortable coding in various languages and can build things that machines can use to get things done
  • Data Enthusiast – the idea of data gets you hot and bothered, but you’re still sharpening your skill set

You’ll be asked to select your current level of experience at the time of registering your interest.
