World Water Day Fundraiser

Would you drink this water?Thursday 22nd March was World Water Day, and since Softwire’s official charity this year is Water Aid, we thought we’d better do something to mark the occasion.

To remind us how lucky we are to have access to safe water, and to raise some money at the same time, we asked colleagues to give optional donations whenever they used water in the office. That included toilet trips, making tea and even washing hands – although we were very careful not to discourage any of these practices!

In total we raised £251.50 for Water Aid, which was great considering all we were selling was water… there was some discussion about whether we should also charge for all the soft drinks in the fridge, given how much water is used in their production, but we decided that it would bankrupt us!

Softwire Charity Quiz Night

The first Softwire charity quiz night was held recently to raise money for Medecins Sans Frontieres.  45 people attended forming 8 teams and the competition was fierce, especially for the delicious buffet laid on by a local curry house. Congratulations go to Tom Riley, Rowan Hill and friends on winning not only the main competition, but also the raffle at the end!

We raised a total of £735 for MSF – thanks to everyone who attended and donated. And many thanks to Quizmaster Tom Steer, who produced some great head-scratchers. Here are some of my favourites (select the text to see the answers):

We made it to Brighton!

In my last blog post I told you that a number of Softwire employees and friends were preparing to cycle 60 miles to Brighton on a sponsored ride for Teenage Cancer Trust (here’s our sponsorship page).

The good news

Our running total for sponsorship raised is nearly at £2000 at the time of writing, including Gift Aid. The money raised by Softwire employees from our Brighton cycle ride will be matched by an equal donation from Softwire. This will be added to the total (currently around £1750) from our other fundraising activities throughout the year, such as an on-the door collection at our annual party, making over  £5000 (and counting) raised by Softwire for Teenage Cancer Trust in 2011.

The other good news is that we did all make it to Brighton somehow!

Softwire cycle to Brighton for Teenage Cancer Trust

Nine Softwire employees (from left to right - Rob D, Luci, Tim, JennyChris H, Simon W, Phil and Dezzy plus Iain) are going to be cycling from the Softwire office in Kentish Town to Brighton this Saturday (29th October 2011) for the charity which Softwire are supporting this year – the Teenage Cancer Trust. Friends and family are welcome and there are approximately 15 people altogether doing the trip.

Softwire Brighton cycling team

The route is around 60 miles long and apparently quite hilly, as it goes over the South Downs. The group is of mixed ability, with a few very keen cyclists and some newcomers to long distances, who are pushing new boundaries (and crossing their fingers that they will make it all the way!)

Hopefully the late October weather will be kind to us and it won’t be too wet or windy…

Wish us all luck and please sponsor us at http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/team/Softwire. Softwire have promised to match donations up to £3000. Teenage Cancer Trust fund and build specialised cancer units for teenagers in NHS hospitals across the UK, giving a better living environment which has been proven to improve recovery chances. It would be absolutely fantastic if we were able to hit this target to support their great work.

An even stranger way we’ve been giving to charity

Since my explanation of the charity process at Softwire (read the article here), there’s been a rather strange charity development.

kiva

It seems that one of our employees, who has yet to be revealed, has decided that we’re still not doing enough. Going by the moniker of Softwirian (a common way to refer to an unspecified member of the company), they sent the email below plus a $25 KIVA voucher to the surprised members of the rest of the company.

After some initial debate, Softwire seem to have taken the idea on board and we’ve now got a KIVA community page (http://www.kiva.org/team/softwire) with 35 members and $2,100 donated.

If you want to find out more about KIVA, one of our guys found this TED talk (no doubt while Googling frantically to try and work out what was going on) http://www.ted.com/index.php/talks/jessica_jackley_poverty_money_and_love.html.

Softwirian’s cryptic communication follows.

Software development and charity

“Software development” and “charity” aren’t usually two phrases you hear combined, so you might be surprised to hear that here at Softwire we have a Softwire Charity Scheme to make sure that we’re doing our part. In fact, we’re so active in our charity work we even have a specific post to co-ordinate our efforts, that of Charity Officer. The current incumbent is Ed Smith (below).

Ed Smith, charity officer

The Charity Officer looks after the Charity Budget, a yearly allocated sum that Softwire are prepared to spend on good deeds. Each Softwire employee can organise a charitable event, and match up to £500 raised from the Charity Budget. We also offer matched time off for charitable work, so if you take a week’s holiday to go and teach in Africa, Softwire will give you another week off so you can stay for two.

The Charity Officer organises charity contributions for company-wide events, such as our annual company birthday party (which is worthy of a blog post of its own) and Oxstock where we all take to the stage for Everychild. And finally, he has to ensure that any unused resources (e.g. old PCs etc) are donated to charity where possible.

The great thing about the Charity Scheme is that in addition to supporting our employees who are doing good deeds, it’s prompted lots of great charity events that wouldn’t have taken place otherwise. Such as when four of us agreed to go parachute jumping for Interact Worldwide.
